I've fallen and I can't get up edition

Image: http://sd.keepcalm-o-matic.co.uk/i/i-ve-fallen-and-i-can-t-get-up.png

Unbelievably, a slip and fall in the shower yesterday resulted in an ambulance call, ride to ER, Xrays, visit with my orthopedist for a shoulder that is broken in 3 places. Sigh.Cat scans Mon, surgery Wed. Luckily (?) having had bi lateral rotator cuff surgeries, means thart we can weather this well, having been thrugh similar recoveries. Luckily, it's my left side.

Kids are stepping up to the plate, DD helps with personal care, DD and DS are lined up for errands/shopping/appointments. DD and DSs helping with laudry, DD helped get supper in the CP before leaving for workk this morning. I know that there will be added expenses so anywhere we can pinch back, we will continue to do so,

I couldn't make this up if I tried.

So sorry! At least it's good to know your kids jumped right in and stepped up.

Ironic you made it through this miserable winter and then this happens in the house.

Good thoughts!

Holy Cow Carol! Glad to see your kids are helping out. What an ordeal for you - and unplanned time off from work to boot. Hopefully you won't need a surgical repair on this injury.

Glad to see your kids are stepping up and helping out around the house. Maybe, it's a good time to sit down with the lodgers and remind them that this new development in the running of the household really means that they need to step up and pay their way (plus the owing $) I'm sure that there will be some added expenses as you heal, additional cleaning service, added commuting costs to the Dr appts.

Just because you're the parental adult doesn't mean you should have to shoulder all the $ burden (no pun in tended)

Oh, no, could you hear me groan from 1,000 miles away? I am so sorry. You are such a hard worker and good person, I just hate it that you have to go through this. Wish I could help out, but glad you have the kids to help! A stern reminder for me to be more careful in the shower!

OMG Carol! Hope surgery goes well and the shoulder heals quickly!

Thanks all for the well wishes.

CTBargain-yes, i am having surgery this Wed, it's a really, really bad break. I always do a good job when i am injured. Bruising now appearing, icing the shoulder/arm to keep it from swelling up to thigh sized.

got to keep the household running as smoothly as possible and yes, everyone needs to step up.

happy gram
i had previously noted that the shower floor was/could be slippery and have been careful.. happened so quickly and with my hand surgeries i am unable to put my hand up/flat to stop myself. Adding bars to my shower for my next forever home-added to my list.

slugmama said...

Geez Carol......I hope the surgery goes well and you heal quickly. Start popping Vitamin Cs before you go in for the surgery to aid in healing.

You can't seem to catch a break(ooo? bad choice of words there, sorry)....

DW said...

Oh, Carol ... ouch! Hoping you heal quickly (and that you've already met your deductible on insurance!) Sending good thoughts to you.

Sluggy-bonus is that we eat so healthfully and I always heal well and quickly. vit c would aggrevate my gerd for which i am on RX, but i get plenty in my diet. we're out of oj, but other juices in am fill in, as does cabbage-an unusual (not commonly known) source, tomatoes. Spaghetti n meatballs in marinara tonight, lots of rest helps, too.

DW-we hit the deductible months ago! bonus-my md's practice recently remodeled their main office to add a another surgical center there. MD's secretary told me yesterday that while the md's accept my ins, the surgical center doesnt't but, as a courtesy to those patients such as myself w/ ins X, they'll accept whatever my ins pays as out of network, so at the end of the day-i should be w/o any debt.

Falling in the shower is a big fear of mine. I scrub the shower floor almost daily, but even then it can still be slippery in spots. I need to look into getting something to put on the floor to help with that. Will be thinking and praying for you and keeping you in good thoughts during your surgery.

Oh no!! Glad your kids are helping out. Take care.

Belinda-it's a plastic shower "kit" and the floor has somr raised, rough surfaced "stripes" but i had noticed it was slippery in the past and i was careful. Sigh. Some days, i feel 100 y.o.

I am so sorry! I get so much inspiration from your blog. I broke my foot nine months ago, was recently diagnosed with fibromyalgia and am awaiting the results of an MRI on my right shoulder for a possible torn rotator cuff. Just getting through the day is now my goal. Best wishes for a speedy recovery!

I know I'm older than the rest of you (I'll be 80 in June)and still very active. When I moved into this apt. the grab bars were already in and I was going to have them removed. My shower is a plastic kit type, too, and the first time I felt the slippery part I was glad I had a bar to grab. Now after two knee replacements done in two years, I'm really glad they are there. You might want to think about something now, Carol, even tho it's a rental. Big hugs and lots of blessings! Shirley

I am so sorry to hear this Carol. I am wishing you a very speedy and as painless as possible recovery.

that is awful. Now you might not believe me, but as you have broken it, it will be a fast heal than if you had just torn the ligaments like my mam did before Christmas. They told her in the hospital, is she had broken or dislocated her shoulder it would have been a faster mend.

I too am glad to see the kids making an effort. Good luck.

Wow, Carol. So sorry to hear of this.

You are well on your way to becoming a bionic woman at this point. ;-)

It's good that you have an experienced, competent, medical team in place.

I will keep you all in my thoughts and prayers.

Carol, while they're fixing the shoulder is there anything else they can fix while they're set it? Kinda like when you go in for an oil change and the do the wiper blades and rotate the tires? LOL!

I really feel for you. I broke my shoulder three and half years ago slipping out of the tub. Haven't taken a bath since. I believe that was the most painful broken bone I have had and I have had several. I will be thinking good thoughts and a quick recover for you.

I am sending healing thoughts your way Carol. As completely organized as you are, I am certain things at home will run smoothly.

unbelievable! it's one injury after another-- I hope you are soon pain free and mobile again. so frustrating, I'm sure!

Marcia in rural WNY said...

I'm so sorry! It must be a major frustration for you to be injured so frequently. I am 72, and started with the household helpers a few years ago---a grab bar in the tub, and also a bannister for the cellar stairs where there was none before. Also, at my weekly yoga class we always do balance exercises to strengthen knees, hips, and work on maintaining our balance. It seems to work, as I got my feet tangled up last summer on a slope in the yard, and while I took a fairly hard fall, I was unhurt. Although how you would find time for a yoga class, I can't imagine!! I don't even take calcium supplements, but I do have cereal with skim milk 6 days a week--so assume the milk helps with the bones. I've never had a bone density test either. The best to you as you have surgery and work towards recovery.
