Why I save "good jars"

I've always prefered glass over plastic, even as a kid, selecting a "glass glass" over a plastic cup any day. Good glass jars with lids are always re-purposed here, as I also prefer to use them over plastic for food storage. Here are 2 saved jars, now housing 2 dressing mixes I just bought from Penzeys. I feel they keep the food fresher, and after having lived through an Indian Moth infestation at my former home, a necessity to keep food safe.

I always try to keep the glass pickle jars but my husband won't let me anymore. He says I already have too many :) I feel guilty throwing good glass jars away though.

Do you have a recycling program where you live?

Oh yes, we do not throw away glass jars here as they can be reused for so many things. I store popcorn, bought in bulk, in them in the freezer. I keep spices, again bought in bulk, in them in my pantry. I use them to store paper clips, rubber bands, binder clips, next to my work space/computer. I also use them to hold grease leftover from cooking ground beef. Since I transport garbage in my jar to the local garbage facility I like to keep it as neat and clean as possible.

I think it's easier to see the contents through glass than through plastic anyway.

That's a good question. Our city does have a recycling program with curb pick up. But since I don't live in a normal house I have never figured out if I can get on the route. I know it would be a simple phone call but I'm kind of lazy if I can't find the information I need online. I hate talking on the phone. We live in a condo and don't put our garbage out at the curb like people with houses do. I should really ask the condo association about setting up a recycling bin but again... lazy.

Hmm, I'd never thought of them keeping food fresher. But I do keep all of my bagged spices in a glass jar, and the ginger in particular has been extremely fresh for a long time. So, good to know!
I save glass jars, too. I like the way they look with or w/o lids for keeping supplies. I use them on my desk to organize paper clips, pens, scissors, etc.
